THIS AIN'T THE '60S NO MORE

This ain't the '60s, he said with a sneer
As if trying to debase everything I held dear
As if all my ideals and principles screamed
To revive some Haight-Ashbury scene

This ain't the '60s, he said with a laugh
That was more like a sob from a heart torn in half
You can't save the world - or are you still stoned?
And each must look out for his own

And as he continued I searched in his eyes
For a thin strand of hope that was not compromised
A small vein of gold in the heart of the whore
Sayin' this ain't the '60s no more

Who ruled the decades of glitter and greed
With a chip on their hearts and the world at their knees
With the almighty dollar embroidered in green
On the pages of Us magazine?

And what makes them think they're immune to our fate?
They have only to look, they have only to wait
Till the tides of neglect beat a path to their door
Because this ain't the '60s no more

Who'll bear the burden of Martin and John
Who will march in the front, who will strike up the song?
And who will declare that it's never too late
To speak love to the powers of hate?

And you who made promises decades ago
To the spirit of justice that burns in your soul
It's time to redeem them for rich and for poor
Because this ain't the '60s no more

This ain't the '60s, he said with a grin
Don't you know what is out, can't you see what is in?
I've earned what I have and I am what I own
And I'll thank you to leave me alone

And off in the distance I heard his young voice
From the days he believed that we still had a choice
The days when we dreamed we could right every wrong
To the words of some Bob Dylan song

This must be the '90s, I slowly replied
Cause you don't even claim to have God on your side
And you can't feel the beats of the hearts broke in two
Cause you don't see what's in it for you

But others will work so the ship can come in
And the bright chimes of freedom will flash once again
And we'll dance on the graves of the masters of war
Singin' this ain't the '60s no more

And you who made promises decades ago
To the spirit of justice that burns in your soul
It's time to redeem them for rich and for poor
Because this ain't the '60s no more
This ain't the '60s no more
This ain't the '60s no more
